Shashank Subramanyam

Shashank Subramanyam is an internationally acclaimed Carnatic flautist and one of India's leading exponents of the bamboo flute. A child prodigy who began performing at the age of six, he has since captivated audiences in over fifty countries with his melodic depth, intricate improvisation, and virtuosity. Recipient of the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France, 2022) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (India, 2017), Shashank has pioneered innovations including the multi-flute fingering technique and the 'Shashank style' of Carnatic flute.

Over his distinguished three-decade career, he has collaborated with maestros across traditions — from Ustad Zakir Hussain and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt to John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia — appearing on prestigious stages worldwide. An 'A-Top' grade artiste of All India Radio, Shashank continues to perform, teach, and compose from Chennai, inspiring a new generation of flautists while carrying forward India's rich musical heritage with creativity and grace.

Students Testimonials

Learning from Shashank Subramnaiyam (Ustad Ji) has been a transformative experience. His teaching style is patient, structured, and deeply musical. He breaks down complex ragas and fingering techniques in a way that feels simple and intuitive. What I appreciate most is how he focuses equally on technical skill and emotional expression. After just a few months, my tone, breath control, and confidence improved dramatically. Shashank is not just a teacher—he’s a mentor who genuinely cares about his students’ growth.

Arav Menon

Intermediate Learner

Shashank Ji's classes are the perfect balance of discipline and inspiration. He has an exceptional ear and immediately identifies even the smallest nuances in pitch and phrasing, yet he always corrects with encouragement rather than pressure. His explanations of Hindustani classical concepts are crystal clear, and his practice routines are both enjoyable and effective. I’ve studied with several teachers before, but none have helped me progress as quickly and joyfully as Shashank.
